There's an asymmetry in skincare that few people question: we spend minutes every morning caring for our face and seconds on the body, when body skin has the same biology, the same ageing mechanisms and the same barrier needs. The result is that photodamage on the décolletage and arms, chronic dry skin on legs, and flaking elbows and knees are treated as inevitable when they're preventable.
The Body's Skin Barrier Also Degrades
Body soaps are generally more aggressive than facial cleansers — alkaline pH, higher concentration SLS, more potent detergents. Body skin is washed more, with hotter water and without the aftercare the face receives. The result: chronically compromised barrier that in many people manifests as dry skin, flaking, itching and sensitivity to textiles.
Body SPF: The Most Ignored
The décolletage and forearms receive the same UVA radiation as the face. 80% of the visible ageing in these areas is photodamage. Facial SPF applied to the body doesn't scale economically — but mineral body SPF exists, is cheaper per volume and prevents the age spots on hands and arms that no topical active can completely reverse.
After the shower, Nourishing Oil on still-damp skin seals in hydration before water evaporates. The same fatty acids that replenish the facial barrier replenish the body barrier.
Nourishing Oil →The Minimum Effective Body Protocol
- Gentle cleanser — appropriate pH, no SLS when possible
- Chemical exfoliation 1–2x/week — lactic or mandelic acid; renews surface, improves moisturiser absorption
- Moisturiser with ceramides or oil — applied to damp skin for maximum efficacy
- SPF on exposed areas — décolletage, arms, backs of hands
The Most Neglected Areas (and How to Treat Them)
- Elbows and knees: dead cell accumulation + dryness. Lactic acid 1x/week + rich occlusive
- Heels: hyperkeratosis. Urea acid + shea butter under socks overnight
- Décolletage: accumulated photodamage. Daily SPF + vitamin C when possible
The Lactic Acid Exfoliating Serum works on the body just as it does on the face — gentle chemical exfoliation that prepares skin to absorb the moisturiser that follows.
