Washing your face: why squeaky clean isn't the goal

Washing your face until it squeaks feels like proof it's clean. But that sensation usually means something else: your skin has lost some of the natural oils on its surface. That isn't extra cleanliness, and it isn't glow. Here's why, and what to do instead.

Why skin squeaks after washing

Your skin has a barrier on its surface. It is made of cells and lipids, such as ceramides and fatty acids. It helps hold in water and protect.

Cleansers use surfactants. They bind to oil and dirt so water can rinse them away. If they are harsh, or you scrub hard, they also take away some of those lipids.

The result can be tightness, mild stinging or redness. That is discomfort, not cleanliness.

What gives skin a glow

Shine and glow are not the same thing. Shine can simply be oil. Glow comes from a smooth, hydrated surface that reflects light more evenly.

Dry or irritated skin tends to look dull, sometimes with small flakes. That's why looking after your barrier often helps more than washing more.

A routine by type of ingredient

  • Cleanse with gentle surfactants: they lift excess oil and dirt without leaving skin uncomfortable. More foam does not mean cleaner.
  • Hydrate with humectants (such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid): they draw water to the skin's surface.
  • Soften with emollients and lipids (such as ceramides or squalane): they smooth the skin and help reduce water loss.
  • Protect in the morning with sun filters: sun exposure is one cause of dull, dehydrated skin. They always go last in your daytime routine.

Habits for washing better

  1. Use lukewarm water. Very hot water dries skin out.
  2. Wash morning and night. If your skin feels uncomfortable in the morning, you can keep it simple.
  3. Massage with your fingertips instead of scrubbing.
  4. Pat dry rather than dragging the towel.
  5. Moisturise while skin is still slightly damp.

Three common myths

  • “If it doesn't squeak, it isn't clean.” False. Clean skin can feel comfortable.
  • “Oily skin needs washing more often.” Washing a lot can irritate and doesn't fix the cause of oiliness.
  • “If it stings, it's working.” Stinging isn't a sign of effectiveness. It's a sign to stop.

Frequently asked questions

When do you put serum on your face?

After cleansing, on clean skin, and before moisturiser. The general rule is to go from the lightest textures to the richest.

How do you apply serum on your face?

Use a few drops, spread them with your fingertips and press in gently. Let it settle before the next step.

How do you hydrate your face?

Pair a humectant with a cream that helps keep that water in. Apply to slightly damp skin and protect it from the sun in the morning.

How do you use a face mask?

Apply it to clean skin and follow the time on the packaging. Rinse with lukewarm water, then moisturise. If your skin is irritated, skip the mask for now.

Why does sunscreen leave a white cast?

Some filters, especially mineral ones, are particles that reflect light and can leave a whitish tone. It can also happen if you apply too much or spread too little. Massaging it in well and letting it settle usually helps.

When to see a dermatologist

Book an appointment if your skin stings or flakes persistently, if you have redness that won't settle, or spots that aren't improving. The same goes if products you used to tolerate start to irritate.
