The natural skincare market promotes hundreds of ingredients. Most are backed by anecdotal evidence, in vitro studies — on cells, not people — or trials funded by the manufacturers themselves. The problem isn’t that natural ingredients don’t work: it’s that the same ‘natural’ label covers extracts backed by decades of clinical research and petal infusions without a single study.

These seven are different: they have controlled trials, documented mechanisms of action and measurable results under real-world conditions of use.

The Hierarchy of Evidence That Matters

Before the list, the criteria. Not all ‘scientific evidence’ carries the same weight, and brands exploit precisely this confusion:

  1. Randomised, controlled clinical trial in humans — the gold standard. Few natural ingredients make the grade
  2. Controlled clinical study — well-conducted, without randomisation. This is where most serious active ingredients are found
  3. In vitro or animal studies — promising, but inconclusive for human skin. This is where almost all the lavish botanical claims on labels fall
  4. Anecdotal evidence — testimonials, historical tradition. Useful as a hypothesis, never as proof

When a brand claims ‘scientifically proven’ without specifying the level, it implies level 3 — that is almost always where it falls.

1. Plant-based hyaluronic acid

Produced by bacterial fermentation, chemically identical to that of animal origin. Attracts and retains up to a thousand times its weight in water. At different molecular weights, it acts at different depths: high molecular weight on the surface, with an immediate effect; low molecular weight in the dermis, with longer-lasting hydration. Solid evidence of a reduction in dehydration wrinkles and an increase in elasticity.

2. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Unique versatility: reduces sebum on the surface at 2 per cent, inhibits melanin transfer at 4–5 per cent, promotes ceramide synthesis to strengthen the skin barrier, and has an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting IL-8 and TNF-α. Tolerated by virtually all skin types, including sensitive skin and rosacea. It is synthetically produced, not extracted — but is bioidentical to the body’s own vitamin B3.

3. Bakuchiol

4. Stabilised Forms of Vitamin C

Primary antioxidant — neutralises free radicals generated by UV and pollution. Inhibits tyrosinase, reducing melanin production. It is an enzymatic co-factor in collagen synthesis: without vitamin C, this synthesis is compromised. Effective at 10–20 per cent in the form of pure ascorbic acid, or at 2–3 per cent in stabilised forms, which trade some potency for much greater stability.

5. Prebiotics (Inulin, FOS)

Extracted from chicory root. They serve as a substrate for the beneficial bacteria of the skin microbiome, which produce natural lactic acid that maintains the protective acidic pH, inhibits pathogens and modulates inflammation. 6. Plant-derived ceramides

Does ‘natural’ mean safer?

No. Many essential oils are natural and are among the most common contact allergens in cosmetics. The origin tells you where the ingredient comes from, not what it does to your skin.

If an ingredient hasn’t been tested, is it useless?

Not necessarily — it just means we don’t know. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The problem is paying the price of a proven active ingredient for one that is still at the hypothesis stage.

Can a synthesised ingredient be ‘clean’?
