The INCI list is the only mandatory, non-negotiable piece of information on a cosmetic package. Everything else — the claims, the brand seals, the ‘scientifically proven’ — has room to manoeuvre. The ingredients list doesn't: it's regulated, has a defined order and international nomenclature.
Knowing how to read it is the skill that makes all marketing irrelevant. It takes ten minutes to learn and lasts a lifetime.
The Order Rule — and Its Limit
Ingredients appear in descending order of concentration. But there's one exception that changes everything: below 1%, they can be listed in any order.
Practical consequence: if an active appears after the preservatives (typically Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate) or after the colourants, it's almost certainly below 1%. For many actives, that means concentration without function.
This is how twenty botanical ingredients end up on a label without a single one having a real effect.
Where Actives Need to Sit
- Niacinamide — effective at 2–5%: should appear in the first seven
- Vitamin C as ascorbic acid — effective at 10–20%: in the first five
- Hyaluronic acid — effective at 0.1–2%: can sit lower, but before the preservatives
- Bakuchiol — effective at 0.5–2%: same rule
- Urea — moisturising at 5–10%, keratolytic above that: in the first five
How to Recognise Natural Origin
INCI nomenclature gives reliable clues:
- Endings in extract, juice, oil, butter, wax — generally botanical
- Binomial Latin name (Aloe Barbadensis, Butyrospermum Parkii) — plant origin identified by species
- Hydrolyzed prefix followed by a plant name — plant proteins
- Ferment filtrate or Ferment lysate — actives obtained through fermentation, therefore vegan
Markers of synthetic origin
- PEG followed by a number — polyethylene glycols
- Parabens — Methylparaben, Propylparaben
- Silicones — endings in -cone, -conol, -siloxane
- SLS / SLES — Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate
None of these is dangerous on its own — they're assessed and permitted. But they're incompatible with natural certification, and some (SLS especially) have a documented impact on the skin barrier.

European legislation requires certain aromatic substances with recognised allergenic potential to be declared by name once they exceed a given concentration. You'll find these names at the end of the list, often in italics:
Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Geraniol, Citronellol, Eugenol, Coumarin, Benzyl Salicylate, among others.
A detail that confuses a lot of people: most of these are naturally derived — they come from essential oils, not synthetic fragrance. Seeing Limonene in a certified product isn't a contradiction: it's transparency about what the citrus oil naturally contains.
If you have reactive skin or a history of contact dermatitis, this is the section of the list that matters most to you.
Warning Signs on the List
- Forty ingredients with no active among the first ten — filler
- Alcohol among the first three in a leave-on product — check if it's the texture you're after; on dry or reactive skin, avoid it
- Fragrance in third or fourth place — a significant fraction of the formula
- No INCI list at all — illegal in the EU. Don't buy it
Natural Doesn't Mean Effective — or Safe
The most common mistake is assuming natural origin implies efficacy or tolerability. It implies neither. Snake venom is natural. Stinging nettle is natural.
The relevant question is never origin — it's mechanism of action, concentration and evidence. A natural active at an insufficient concentration does nothing; the same active at the studied concentration changes the skin.

Vegan Actives With Published Evidence
- Bakuchiol — randomised trial against retinol, equivalent results at 12 weeks
- Vitamin C — antioxidant and cofactor for collagen synthesis
- Niacinamide at 5% — sebum, dark spots and barrier
- Lactic acid — the AHA with the best tolerability profile
Actives among the first ingredients, declared concentrations, verifiable certification on the label. That's all you need to demand from any brand.

Why does water always come first?
Because it's the ingredient at the highest concentration in most formulas — typically 60 to 80%. It's not a sign of poor quality: it's the vehicle that allows everything else to dissolve and be delivered.
Is an ingredient at the end of the list useless?
It depends on the ingredient. Preservatives, chelators and pH adjusters work at very low concentrations and are there for a technical reason. A treatment active that needs 5% to work is the one that can't be listed last.
Are brands required to state percentages?
No. Only the order is mandatory. When a brand states active percentages, it's giving information it doesn't have to give — and that, on its own, is a signal.
Does 'paraben-free' mean safer?
Not necessarily. Parabens are among the most studied preservatives and are permitted at authorised concentrations. Choosing to avoid them is legitimate, but the argument is one of preference and formula profile, not demonstrated danger.
How do I know if an ingredient is comedogenic?
The comedogenicity scales that circulate were built on rabbit ear tests with pure ingredients — not on finished formulas or human skin. They're indicative, not conclusive. What decides is the complete formula and your own skin.
