The choice between a cream cleanser and a gel cleanser isn't about texture preference — it's about skin type and barrier condition. A cream cleanser applied to oily skin can congest pores. A vigorous gel on dry skin can worsen a compromised barrier. Getting this choice right is the first factor that determines how your skin responds to everything that follows.
Cream Cleanser: When It's the Right Choice
An emollient-based formulation — containing lipids (butters, oils) that cleanse while replenishing some of the skin's barrier lipids. Produces little to no foam. Suitable for:
- Dry skin — without stripping the already-scarce natural sebum production
- Mature skin — more delicate, with reduced sebum production
- Sensitive skin with a compromised barrier
- Morning cleansing on skin that hasn't sweated or been exposed to pollution
Limitation: doesn't effectively remove mineral SPF or full-coverage makeup — needs double cleansing with an oil-based first step at night.
Gel Cleanser: When It's the Right Choice
A water-based formula with surfactants — effectively removes excess sebum, impurities and product residue. With gentle plant-derived surfactants (decyl glucoside, coco-glucoside), it cleanses without disrupting the barrier. Suitable for:
- Oily and combination skin — sebum control without over-stripping
- Normal skin — balanced cleansing
- Second step of nighttime double cleansing
- Post-workout or on hot days
After any type of cleansing, the Prebiotic Serum rebalances the microbiome — faster with gel (more disruptive) than with a cream cleanser.
Prebiotic Repair Serum →The Decision by Skin Type and Time of Day
- Dry skin / morning: cream cleanser or just lukewarm water
- Dry skin / night with SPF: cleansing oil → gentle gel
- Oily skin / morning and night: gentle gel with plant-derived surfactants
- Combination skin / morning: light gentle gel or very light cream cleanser
- Sensitive skin: fragrance-free cream cleanser, always
What Settles the Choice: pH
Regardless of texture, pH is the non-negotiable criterion. pH above 6.5: avoid it, whether the texture is cream or gel. Both can have the wrong pH. A pH strip test (a couple of euros at any pharmacy) is more informative than any packaging claim.
Dry or sensitive skin post-cleanse: the Sensitive Skin Moisturiser closes the vulnerability window opened by cleansing in under 60 seconds.
