Hyaluronic Acid: Everything Marketing Doesn't Explain
Share
A rabbit icon on packaging means nothing legally. Any brand can place a stylized rabbit without any certification process. The word "cruelty-free" also has no legal definition regulated in the EU or the US. The only way to verify real "cruelty-free" status is through third-party certification — and by understanding exactly what each certification covers.
The Certifications That Matter
Leaping Bunny (Cruelty Free International)
The most rigorous standard. It requires that no stage of production — raw materials, formulation, final product — uses animal testing. It includes auditing the supply chain, not just the final brand. Globally recognized.
PETA Beauty Without Bunnies
Two levels: "Cruelty-Free" (no animal testing) and "Cruelty-Free + Vegan" (no testing + no animal ingredients). A self-declaration process with verification — less rigorous than Leaping Bunny regarding the supply chain but valid as an indicator.
Ecocert COSMOS (additional support)
Certifies naturalness and origin, not explicitly "cruelty-free" — but the requirements for natural formulation exclude ingredients that typically require animal testing.
Vegan and Ecocert COSMOS Natural certified. The certifications are on the label — verifiable, not just declarative.
View Certified Products →The Crucial Distinction: Cruelty-Free ≠ Vegan ≠ Natural
- Cruelty-free: no animal testing — but may contain animal-derived ingredients (honey, lanolin, silk)
- Vegan: no animal ingredients — but may have been tested on animals (rare but possible)
- Natural: botanical-origin ingredients — no implication regarding animal testing
A brand can be cruelty-free without being vegan, vegan without being cruelty-free (theoretically), and natural without being either. The combination of the three is the most complete standard.
The Problem of Markets with Mandatory Testing
Brands selling in mainland China (not in free-trade zones) are required by local law to perform animal testing for "special cosmetics" categories. A brand that sells in mainland China cannot be genuinely cruelty-free in that market, regardless of what it declares in others. Check the market where the brands you follow operate.
How to Verify Quickly
- Visit leapingbunny.org — a searchable database of certified brands
- Visit peta.org/beauty — a list of verified brands
- Look for the Leaping Bunny symbol on the back of the product (not the front — the back is where the real certifications appear)
Vegan skincare with verifiable Ecocert COSMOS certification. No claims without proof.
