The natural skincare market promotes hundreds of ingredients. Most have anecdotal evidence, in vitro studies (in cells, not people) or manufacturer-funded trials. These 7 have something different: randomised clinical trials, documented mechanisms of action and measurable results in real conditions of use.

1. Plant-Derived Hyaluronic Acid (Fermentation)

Produced by bacterial fermentation, chemically identical to animal-derived HA. Attracts and retains up to 1000x its weight in water in skin layers. In different molecular weights, acts at different depths. Solid evidence in multiple studies for reduction of fine dehydration lines and increased elasticity.

2. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Unique versatility: sebum reduction (-25% in 4 weeks at 2%), melanin transfer inhibition (dark spot reduction at 4–5%), ceramide synthesis (barrier reinforcement), anti-inflammatory (inhibits IL-8 and TNF-α). Tolerated by virtually all skin types including sensitive and rosacea.

3. Bakuchiol

Randomised clinical trial (Dhaliwal et al., 2019, BJD): equivalent efficacy to 0.5% retinol at 12 weeks for fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. No photosensitivity, no adaptation period, compatible with pregnancy.

4. Vitamin C (Stabilised Ascorbic Acid)

Primary skin antioxidant — neutralises free radicals from UV and pollution. Inhibits tyrosinase (melanin production). Stimulates collagen synthesis. Effective at 10–20% for ascorbic acid; stabilised forms at 2–3% offer better stability with comparable efficacy.

5. Prebiotics (Inulin, FOS)

Substrate for beneficial bacteria in the skin microbiome. A balanced microbiome produces natural lactic acid that maintains the protective acidic skin pH, inhibits pathogens, and modulates inflammation.

6. Plant-Derived Ceramides

Lipids forming 50% of the cement between stratum corneum cells. Without sufficient ceramides, the barrier loses the capacity to retain water. Plant-derived ceramides (sphingolipids from rice, wheat) have a structure compatible with human skin.

7. Alpha-Arbutin

More potent tyrosinase inhibitor than regular arbutin. Reduces melanin synthesis without destroying melanocytes. Evidence for reduction of sun spots and melasma at 2% in 12-week studies. Synergistic with niacinamide.
