The skincare industry has an economic incentive to make you believe the problem is always the product. The reality is that in most cases where skincare doesn't work, it's not a product problem — it's an application, sequence, frequency or incompatibility problem. These 5 mistakes account for 80% of cases.
Mistake 1: Too Many Actives at Once
Introducing retinol/bakuchiol, vitamin C, AHAs, niacinamide and peptides simultaneously seems to maximise results. The actual result is the opposite: cross-sensitivity that makes it impossible to know what's working, cumulative inflammation that cancels positive effects, and a barrier so overloaded it starts rejecting everything.
Correct protocol: one new active at a time, 4 weeks interval before adding the next.
Mistake 2: Applying SPF Before Moisturiser (or the Other Way Around)
SPF always goes last in the morning. Any layer on top of SPF — moisturiser, powder, foundation — dilutes protection and reduces the actual SPF reaching skin. A moisturiser applied on top of SPF can reduce the effective SPF50 to SPF15 or lower.
Mistake 3: Over-Exfoliating
Exfoliating 5–7 times per week with concentrated AHAs is one of the most effective ways to destroy the skin barrier. Signs: skin that visibly shines but burns, persistent redness, sensitivity to products previously tolerated, increased compensatory oiliness. Chemical exfoliation should be 2–3x/week maximum.
Compromised barrier? The Ceramide Night Cream replenishes lost lipids. The Prebiotic Serum restores the disturbed microbiome. Use both for 2 weeks before reintroducing actives.
Ceramide Night Cream →Mistake 4: Applying to Completely Dry Skin
Humectants — hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sodium PCA — need ambient moisture to function. Applied to completely dry skin in a very dry environment, they can paradoxically dehydrate deeper dermal layers by pulling water upward. The ideal application window is 30–60 seconds after washing the face, when skin is still slightly damp.
Mistake 5: Changing Routine Too Frequently
Skin has a cell renewal cycle of ~28 days. Any product needs at least one complete cycle to show measurable results — and many actives (bakuchiol, peptides, vitamin C) require 8–12 weeks. Changing routines after 2 weeks because you're not seeing results is equivalent to quitting a training programme on day three.
FAQ
How do I know if my barrier is compromised?
Signs: redness without apparent cause, burning with products previously tolerated, skin that feels thin and reactive to touch, flaking despite regular hydration. If three or more apply, simplify the routine immediately.
Starting from scratch: Prebiotic Serum + moisturiser suited to your skin type + SPF. Maintain this base for 4 weeks before adding any active.
