Pregnancy doesn't just change skin — it changes what skin can safely absorb. Some actives that form part of a regular routine have evidence of foetal risk and should be paused from the first trimester. Others are perfectly safe or have equivalent alternatives. Confusion in this area is costly — both in unnecessary worry and in real risks that get overlooked.
What Needs to Be Paused (With Documented Reason)
Retinoids (Retinol, Retinal, Tretinoin)
Topical retinoids are contraindicated during pregnancy. Although systemic absorption of cosmetic retinol is minimal, caution is justified by the documented teratogenicity of oral retinoids (isotretinoin) and by the precautionary principle under uncertainty. The alternative with equivalent clinical evidence: bakuchiol.
Salicylic Acid at High Concentrations (>2%)
Oral salicylic acid has documented foetal adverse effects. Usual cosmetic concentrations (0.5–2%) are generally considered safe in topical rinse-off use — but high-concentration leave-on products are considered best avoided as a precaution.
The Retinol Alternative Serum with bakuchiol is the pregnancy substitute — equivalent cell renewal results, no documented restrictions.
Retinol Alternative Serum →What's Safe With Evidence
- Hyaluronic acid — humectant, no documented systemic penetration
- Niacinamide — widely used, no evidence of risk
- Vitamin C (stabilised forms) — antioxidant, safe
- Bakuchiol — no documented restrictions during pregnancy
- Prebiotics — food-grade ingredients with no systemic risk
- Mineral SPF — physical filters without systemic penetration
- Ceramides — natural skin lipids, safe
Pregnancy Hyperpigmentation (Chloasma)
Increased oestrogen and progesterone stimulate melanocytes. Chloasma (pregnancy melasma) is common on the forehead, cheekbones and upper lip. Safe treatment: rigorous mineral SPF + vitamin C + niacinamide. Alpha-arbutin in cosmetics is generally considered safe, but specific pregnancy evidence is limited — consult with your doctor.
Pregnancy routine: Prebiotic Serum + HA Gel + mineral SPF. Safe, effective and complete for all 9 months.
